Employment in Long Island
Base of Operations
Here at Starts With You, we work mostly with small businesses located on Long Island and the greater New York City area. Because of this, we thought it fit to inform our readers about the current state of employment and jobs on Long Island. After examining what’s going on with the state of employment, we’ll try to find positive ways to approach the situation and move forward.
The Statistics
According to the New York department of labor, significantly less people have taken jobs in the month of August when compared to the jobs gained in June and July. This may actually be a good thing because this means that the growth has started to level out instead of increasing exponentially, meaning the job situation is more stable for many. The numbers reflect a time where finding a job seems to be less of a scramble than it was a month or 2 ago.
The industries that saw the biggest growth were retail trade, leisure and hospitality, and financial activities. These industries have seen a substantial growth in the last few months but the numbers compared to last year are not so great. Most industries have seen an overall 12% decrease from 2019 to now. Obviously this is due to the measures a lot of businesses and government took to prevent further spread of the pandemic in Long Island, which was a hotspot in early May. Because of this, a few industries took major hits like restaurants, bars, casinos, etc. We do not need the stats to tell us this because we all saw it in our day to day lives but the important thing to note with that is how our society defined services as essential. This set a precedent for what having a secure business and job meant. For people to be making more money off unemployment than they made while working, while others lost their jobs and homes, demonstrates just how chaotic this virus was for our economy.
Moving Forward
Using the statistics provided by the department of labor, we can now look to see what industries did well compared to their numbers last year and which ones bounced back quickest after the shut down in March. The industry with the biggest bounce back was government jobs. Government jobs are always deemed essential and not only that, with the Census this year, they saw an influx of employment to facilitate that endeavor.
Luckily, a lot of the businesses in our network were deemed essential businesses which ensured some level of security when restrictions were becoming lighter. One such example was All Gas No Brakes, a direct marketing team that works with telecoms clients. Telecoms were deemed necessary as a lot of people were starting to work from home and also internet/phone are quite necessary in our modern day lives. When compared to August of 2019, August 2020 showed no change in industry growth for telecoms. This simply goes to show how secure that industry is and that it isn’t going away any time soon, even in the face of a pandemic.
With the pandemic seemingly at bay for now, restrictions are being lifted all around Long Island with questionable effects. The upcoming Fall and Winter seasons make it a lot easier for viruses to spread and COVID-19 is no exception. While the restrictions continue to get looser, there have been spikes of cases in New York City and even in Long Island near parts of Queens.
Moving forward, All Gas No Brakes has extended their management training program applications to us here at Starts With You. See our post about the management training program here. If you have any questions, reach out to us here through the comments or by email. Applications will be taken here as well.

The pandemic really changed how things work in the world at large. Like you said it pointed to industries like telecommunication to be a stable and sustainable system, pointing to hotel and travels as industries that we must approach with caution. Even at winter, hotels and travels is still been watched with scepticism
The holiday season from Thanksgiving to Christmas is going to be something we really need to look out for. The vaccine is on the way but that doesn’t mean we can relax. Businesses will still need months after the vaccine to recover and we need to be mindful of that
